WORKSHOP TUONG NGOC – EVONIK: SUNSATIONAL SKIN CARE - DATE 29/09/2026
“SUNSATIONAL SKIN CARE” WORKSHOP RECAP: FROM CONSUMER NEEDS TO SUNSCREEN FORMULATION SOLUTIONS
On Tuesday, September 29, 2026, Tường Ngọc, in collaboration with EVONIK, successfully hosted the “SunSational Skin Care” workshop, offering in-depth insights into sunscreen product development. The program connected consumer trends with ingredient solutions and example formulations, providing customers with practical perspectives to support their product research and development.

Tường Ngọc welcomed the supplier and customers attending the workshop and presented them with gifts as a token of appreciation.
The “SUNSATIONAL SKIN CARE” WORKSHOP provided customers with valuable knowledge and insights through its various sessions.
Opening Session: Understanding Evolving Consumer Expectations for Sunscreen Products
The workshop opened with a discussion of changing consumer needs for sunscreen products. Once primarily associated with outdoor activities, sunscreen is increasingly becoming an essential step in daily skincare routines.

Ms. Warissara introduced customers to the sunscreen products she uses for different activities throughout the day.
Beyond effective protection against UV rays, consumers increasingly seek lightweight textures that spread easily, feel less greasy or sticky, and leave minimal white cast. Additional benefits, such as hydration, soothing effects, and skin barrier support, are also gaining attention. These needs highlight future directions for sunscreen product development.
EVONIK experts discussed common formulation challenges, including incomplete dissolution of crystalline UV filters, agglomeration of inorganic UV filters, changes in viscosity over time, and emulsion separation. Balancing sun protection performance with a pleasant skin feel was also a key focus.
Exploring Sunscreen Formulations with Organic UV Filters
The “Innovation in Action – Inspiring Formulations” session began with sunscreens formulated with organic UV filters.
Using example formulations, the presentation explained how to select emollients to help dissolve UV filters and the role of film formers in ensuring their even distribution on the skin. The interplay between ingredients was explored to achieve effective protection, formulation stability, and a lightweight, comfortable application experience.

Customers explored the sensory properties of products made from EVONIK’s sunscreen formulations with organic UV filters.
Exploring Sunscreens with Inorganic UV Filters
For sunscreens with inorganic UV filters, the session focused on filter wetting and dispersion, controlling agglomeration, and minimizing white cast upon application. The Zinc It Up formulation demonstrated how ingredients can be combined to improve spreadability and skin feel. Comparative data highlighted the roles of dispersing aids and film formers within the formulation.

For hybrid sunscreens, the Mild Shield Sunscreen Lotion, Tinted Face Sun Cream, and SunnySide Up formulations showcased different product concepts, ranging from low-viscosity lotions to tinted sunscreens and creams. The presentation examined how to select emulsifier systems, emollients, and sensory additives to achieve the desired texture, stability, and skin finish.
These examples helped customers connect ingredient properties with the requirements of each product format, rather than applying a single formulation system to every need.
Ingredient Selection Guide for Sunscreen Formulators
“The Sunscreen Formulator Guide” session brought together the ingredient groups introduced throughout the workshop:
- Emulsifiers: Select according to the O/W or W/O system, desired viscosity, and characteristics of the formulation’s ingredients.
- Emollients: Consider UV filter solubility, particle wetting, and skin feel.
- Film formers: Select based on the intended contribution to SPF performance, water resistance, and film durability.
- Preservative systems: Assess compatibility with pH, highly polar oil phases, and systems containing pigment particles.
- Sensory additives: Help improve spreadability, reduce shine, and create a smooth, matte finish.
Alongside technical performance, the program introduced renewable-source ingredients, biodegradable options, and alternatives to microplastics for selected applications, offering further approaches to product development.

Hands-on SPF Testing at Tường Ngọc’s Laboratory
Participants gained hands-on experience using the SPF-290AS UV transmittance analyzer to conduct preliminary assessments of sunscreen formulations, monitor UV transmittance, and compare test samples. The results supported formulation screening, adjustment, and optimization from the early stages of development, helping reduce testing time and costs.
Participants also practiced evaluating sunscreen performance using the LS1000-4S-009 solar simulator, learning about sample preparation, irradiation, and test result analysis. This activity helped assess protection against UV radiation and supported the verification of SPF performance and UVA protection using appropriate test methods in accordance with the international standards ISO 23675 and ISO 24443.
Customers followed a demonstration of the SPF testing procedure using the SPF-290AS system at Tường Ngọc’s laboratory.
